Maldives has always been renowned as the top destination for honeymoon travellers and for romantic getaways. This reputation has certainly been aided and abetted by the peaceful tranquillity that the serene blue green waters and sun kissed white sands of the islands offer.

Made up of an archipelago of over 1,000 islands, half of which are as yet uninhabited, the Maldives is mainly a resort nation. Most resorts occupy an entire island or two and also extend into the clear blue water.

The idyllic surroundings are sure to soothe and calm you, allowing for a relaxing and romantic holiday free from the hustle and bustle of the city. The waters surrounding the islands too are teeming with a rich diversity of sea creatures, corals, wrecks and other intriguing aspects. A chance to catch sight of a school of dolphins or whales is an added attraction when visiting here.

Visitors enjoying a romantic getaway can opt to laze out on the beaches soaking up the sun, cooled by the wind from the swaying palm trees and sipping a refreshing drink or practice yoga with the calming and soothing sounds of crashing waves enveloping you. One can also enjoy a relaxing massage that will calm and rejuvenate, or go out on an expedition exploring the waters by scuba diving, snorkelling, diving or if you are more adventurous, paragliding, surfing or waterskiing.

Whatever relaxation and romantic activity you choose, you can be guaranteed that you will have a wonderful and enjoyable time in the Maldives. For those who wish to take something of the islands back home, there are many curio shops especially in the capital – Male – from which cultural items of interest can be purchased.

For those wondering which one of the Maldives resorts to opt for, choose wisely and think carefully as to what exactly you want from this Maldivian holiday. Maldives spa resorts are sure to be the best bet for those on an intimate holiday as there is nothing that sets the mood better for a romantic evening than a luxurious spa treatment. Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas is such a luxurious spa resort that would be ideal for couples.

Jimbaran is an appealing fishing town and tourist destination which is always a delightful place to visit. Not too long ago, the locality was nothing more than a sleepy fishing village which only contained a few residents. Today by contrast, the hand of globalisation has transformed this idyllic haven into a popular visitor attraction that has still retained its rustic charm.

There is no doubt that Jimbaran’s beach is one of its strongest points, with powder-soft sands and gentle waves enveloped by the balmy tropical climate. Swimming here is an excellent option as the environs are considered to be a secure environment for the aquatic pastime. A local attraction is the breathtaking sunsets which may be enjoyed here, perhaps with a refreshing tropical cocktail drink in hand.

Naturally, no excursion to this town would be complete without visiting the local fish market. Many of Bali’s exclusive restaurants purchase their seafood requirements at this market, which offers an amazing selection of fish and crustaceans freshly caught and ripe for cooking. To observe the catch of the day, it is best to arrive early in the morning when the bounty of the ocean is brought in.

The quaint Jimbaran town is an attraction in itself with its multitude of small streets and alleyways. A typical traditional Balinese enclave, this appealing town is a delightful place for a leisurely stroll. The residents are pleasant and welcoming, which adds much to the lure of this charming locality.

One of the town’s key attractions is its splendid array of seafood restaurants, which draws the attention of many visitors. The seafood is very fresh indeed as typically you will have the opportunity to select your own meal from the fish, shrimp, crab, squid, lobster and other oceanic creatures in the extensive selection featured within the tanks of each restaurant.

Surfing is a popular activity here, where you will find excellent conditions. To indulge in this exciting water pursuit, you must hire a boat and travel a short distance to the surf breaks, which will provide exemplary surfing conditions to hang ten in style without wiping out (much).

Those heading to the region and looking for a beach resort in Bali from which to set off on excursions to this enchanting island paradise can consider Westin Resort Nusa Dua Bali. This hotel in Nusa Dua features a range of contemporary comforts and lets you enjoy the very best the island has to offer.

Everyone has heard of Phuket, probably Thailand’s most popular tourist destination, but few have heard of Krabi. Located on the country’s western coast and fronting the warm waters of the Andaman Sea, the Krabi Province is renowned for its beaches and a myriad of attractions. Less crowded than Phuket, while still offering a great experience, Krabi is the ideal vacation spot for couples. The province has many interesting attractions that couples will enjoy visiting, as well as many fun activities to do together.

When it comes to sightseeing, ‘must visit’ attractions include the province’s hugely popular hot springs. The hot springs are situated in the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve, and taking a quick dip in them is bound to be an experience to remember. One can also visit a few of the night markets found around the province. These places sell a variety of goods and souvenirs, all at inexpensive rates, provided one bargains a little. Other popular attractions to visit include the Phi Phi Islands, Ko Lanta, Ao Nang and Railey Beach.

Krabi also offers a long list of things to do for both the adventurous and not-very-adventurous couples. Those looking for a pleasant time can try snorkelling or scuba diving to explore the rich marine life present in the waters off Krabi. They can also go canoeing or kayaking, hike along gorgeous forest trails or go on an elephant safari. Those who want to do something a bit more exciting can try rock climbing or cliff diving. Couples can also go for spa treatments together, which can help them feel well rested and relaxed. Such treatments can help foster feelings of peace and tranquillity that can bring couples closer. Couples can also get married by the sea in a traditional Thai ceremony, while those already married can choose to renew their wows.

A few Krabi resorts, such as the Anantara Si Kao Thailand offer many of the above facilities. In fact, at this particular Trang Resort couples can even wed underwater. The ceremony is performed in the lively, indescribably beautiful waters of the Andaman. For couples looking for a great hotel to spend their vacation, this presents an ideal choice.

The imposing Richmond Castle located in the town of Kalutara is a splendid mansion which is considered to be one of the finest such edifices in the nation of Sri Lanka. Constructed in 1896 this magnificent creation is reputed to be one of the most handsome architectural designs of the period. It was originally the residence of a local governor and landowner, Mudaliyar N. D. A. Silva Wijesinghe who was the possessor of vast wealth. It also functioned as a circuit bungalow for senior officers of the colonial British administration. Today the mansion is a popular visitor attraction as well as an educational institution for underprivileged children of the locality.

Richmond Castle is a grand two storey edifice with no less than 34 windows and 99 doors, adorned with exquisitely crafted glass panes with a design motif of spreading grape vines. According to records two entire shiploads of teak wood were brought over from Burma for the construction of the building.

The entire mansion is characterized by ornate carvings and features Scottish and Italian mirrors and glass windows. It includes everything required for a luxurious lifestyle at the time, including a lavish dancing floor, rooms for guards and workers and a stable.

Many observers have remarked that the building resembles a British mansion more than a stately Sri Lankan home. Even today the timber seems to be perfectly preserved, apparently as fresh as when it was brought to the nation.

The gardens are another thing of beauty at the site, having once boasted a thriving profusion of blooms. Today the gardens are still beautiful, but now feature a host of productive trees such as mangosteen, coconut, rambutan, mango, guava and a number of citrus varieties. The Mudaliyar was a nature lover and painstakingly cultivated his garden, decorating it with numerous marble statues. Of these a number of marble figures still stand.

With so much to see and admire the visitor is sure to be enthralled by this resplendent edifice, which depicts the splendid lifestyle of Sri Lankan mudaliyars in times past.

Visitors to the area desiring a Kalutara hotel will find an outstanding choice in the Mermaid Hotel & Club. This attractive Sri Lanka beach hotel offers quality accommodations and courteous service.
